The Problem

The Journalism Building is home to communication majors, journalism majors, and general education courses. Along with those majors, this building is also home to The Lantern, Ohio State’s student newspaper.

This building has a great foundation but lacks in design. The Journalism Building does not represent the students who frequent the establishment, and the spaces are not being used to their fullest potential. There is a lack of pride and almost no indication of the majors represented in this building. Along with pride, a lack of color, specifically in the lobby, makes this ample space dull and lackluster.

Concept & Strategy

By representing the students who utilize these buildings the most, the spaces are designed to invigorate and support these students. Through a variety of furniture, the design allows for all types of students to feel comfortable and creates a space that allows for varying behaviors and functions.
To allow for various behaviors, flexibility in the furniture options is necessary. There are various seating options regarding the heights of work surfaces, along with different settings. This provides topographic variety, adding visual interest to the lobby. The lobby is designed to act as a gradation of socialization/collaboration, ranging from lounge furniture to individual pods for writing or studying.
There is a strategic use of color throughout the spaces to give a sense of pride to the lobby while also heightening the visual interest overall.
